Speak Out Against Extreme Confinement
February 1, 2012
A new HSUS undercover investigation of two of the top pork producers in the United States reveals pigs mutilated without painkillers and kept in extreme confinement. The industry-standard practices of mutilating the genitals and tails of pigs, and keeping pregnant sows in crates barely larger than their bodies were captured on film at Seaboard Foods and Prestage Farms in Oklahoma. Seaboard is a supplier for Walmart, the largest grocer in the US.
Animals about to undergo an excruciating mutilation like castration should at the very least get a shot of a painkiller beforehand, and pregnant sows should at the very least be able to walk and turn around, this is just basic human decency. The animal cruelty seen at these producers is out of line with public opinion on animal cruelty, and grocers like Walmart should take responsibility for getting animal cruelty out of their supply chain. Speak up for pigs and tell these producers to catch up with their competition and agree to phase out cruel gestation crates.
